Crypto Inheritance Checklist (Non-Custodial)

Use this checklist to turn an abstract inheritance idea into an auditable recovery workflow. The goal is simple: your beneficiary can recover what you intend, without giving up private-key custody during your lifetime.

Execution Checklist

1) Asset Scope

  • List chain + wallet addresses that should be included in inheritance planning.
  • Separate long-term holdings from high-frequency trading wallets.
  • Record which assets require additional off-chain instructions (exchange, multisig, hardware wallet path).

2) Beneficiary Readiness

  • Confirm beneficiary wallet address in writing and verify at least once via signed login.
  • Document who should be primary and fallback beneficiary for each wallet group.
  • Run one rehearsal: beneficiary opens will detail and understands when key capsule is available.

3) Trigger Policy

  • Set heartbeat period based on real lifestyle rhythm (not ideal behavior).
  • Keep a confirmation waiting window to reduce false trigger risk.
  • Define a minimum review cadence (e.g. quarterly) to update heartbeat settings and beneficiary mapping.

4) Recovery Content

  • Keep public notes minimal and never place seeds/private keys in public fields.
  • Put sensitive recovery instructions only in encrypted private content.
  • Maintain a beneficiary-readable recovery sequence: wallet access, decryption, and execution order.

5) Validation & Monitoring

  • Perform offline decryption test before relying on the setup.
  • Monitor on-chain status transitions (Active -> DeathConfirming -> SignalEmitted).
  • After any major wallet change, update your will config in the same week.

Risk Controls You Should Not Skip

  • Do not treat signaling workflow as asset custody or auto-transfer mechanism.
  • Do not set heartbeat too short for your actual behavior.
  • Do not launch without at least one beneficiary rehearsal and one offline test.

Checklist FAQ

How often should I review the setup?

At least once per quarter, and immediately after wallet, beneficiary, or custody tool changes.

Can I skip offline rehearsal and rely on docs only?

Not recommended. Rehearsal is the fastest way to find missing steps before a real incident.

What is the minimum viable setup?

Accurate beneficiary address, realistic heartbeat policy, encrypted private recovery notes, and one successful offline decryption rehearsal.
